A peek into my diary, and some weekend reads

My friend left Lebanon on Sunday.Six of us crammed in a car to drop her off, watching rain streak the windows as we commented on the hoopla outside: police on every corner, journalists multiplying the closer we got to the airport. Then came a boom. We all flinched instinctively, then quickly reasoned: The pope is here now, an American one no less. Surely that grants us two days of irrevocable immunity. Is this what it would feel like to have an Iron Dome?Another boom. Probably ceremonial shots, we thought. All six of us let out the same stunned, almost amused “wow.” Nobody clutched their pearls. Just an emotionally detached recognition of our absurd relationships with our eardrums. After we dropped our friend off, we parked by the airport road, hoping to catch the popemobile heading to Baabda.Dusty asphalt. Crowds by a neon espresso kiosk....
