Deadly attacks

Dear subscriber,

Saad Hariri’s return to the country this week, in time for the commemoration of the 19th anniversary of his father's death, was eclipsed by a new escalation of violence in the south of Lebanon, with 10 civilians, three of them children, killed by two Israeli strikes.

Among the dead was a young boy, Amir Mohsen, just two years old, as well as Hezbollah commander Ali Muhammad al-Debs, the mastermind behind an attack on its territory in March 2023.

One cannot help but wonder how many more civilians will be collateral in the war of deterrence that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are playing.

In parallel, the world looks expectantly at Gaza’s Rafah, wondering when and if Netanyahu will make good on his word and launch a ground offensive, further endangering the lives of 1.4 million people who have nowhere to go.
