First images of the fall of Assad's regime

In Damascus on Sunday morning, celebratory gunfire echoed, and religious chants were broadcast over mosque loudspeakers. Still reeling from the announcement of President Bashar al-Assad’s "escape," the Syrian capital awoke before dawn under rebel control. Scenes of jubilation also unfolded in Homs, which was captured by rebels just hours before the capital.

Rebel groups announced the fall of the "tyrant" during a televised address on Syrian state TV, claiming to have freed all those "unjustly" imprisoned and urging citizens and fighters to safeguard state property. President Assad fled in the face of the rebels' lightning offensive across the country.
