Financial gap: Diplomats back Lebanon’s draft law amid opposition
In recent weeks, Paris, Cairo and Washington have each sent a strong public signal backing the draft law.

Adopted by a 13 to nine vote in Cabinet on Dec. 26, the draft law on restoring financial order and returning deposits has since come under heavy fire from the banking sector, many political parties ranging from the Lebanese Forces (LF) to Hezbollah, as well as the depositors’ associations and some reformist voices who say the text falls short.The question now is whether it will once again hit a wall in Parliament, as did earlier plans in 2020 and 2022.In Cabinet, however, the mood is one of resolve mixed with optimism.
