BEIRUT— MP Nazih Najem (Future Movement/Beirut) said Thursday that media speculation that the leader of his party, former Premier Saad Hariri, would withdraw from politics is unfounded, adding that the Future Movement would take part in the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2022.

Here’s what we know:

    • “Talk about Saad Hariri's withdrawal from politics are not true… and the question of his candidacy in the next election will be a surprise,” Najem said in an interview with Al-Jadeed TV.

    • On Dec. 27, Future MPs denied reports that Hariri would boycott the 2022 parliamentary elections. A spokesperson for the party, meanwhile, told L’Orient Today that the former prime minister “will announce his stance at the right time and the party will act accordingly.”

    • The parliamentarian added that the Future Movement would run in the upcoming parliamentary elections, set for May 15, 2022 after President Michel Aoun on Wednesday signed a decree scheduling the vote.
