Economy minister closes eight unlicensed factories

BEIRUT — Industry Minister George Bouchikian on Monday closed eight unlicensed factories across the country and called on industrialists “to seriously take into consideration” his ministry’s campaign to regulate factories, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • “The strictness in the tracking, warning and closing of factories is only an implementation of the laws and systems followed,” Bouchikian said, adding that his measures were proportionate to the factories’ violations of the law.

    • Bouchikian reportedly closed two dairy products factories in West Bekaa, a food product factory in Anjar-Zahle, a hummus factory in Metn, an olive oil grinding factory in Baaloul, West Bekaa, a potato slicing factory in Al-Marj Zahle, and two clothing manufacturing plants in al-Bouchrieh in Metn.

    • The minister also issued warnings to nine dairy products factories spread across Lebanon.
