BEIRUT — Angry residents in Lebanon’s second city of Tripoli have taken to the streets to protest power cuts and water shortages, while the country’s state electricity grid electricity grid has gone down after two power plants ran out of fuel.

Here's what we know:

    • Residents blocked roads in the Bab al-Tabbaneh quarter of Tripoli as well as the city’s Abou Ali roundabout and Al-Nour Square, an iconic site in the center of the city where protests are often held, according to our sister publication L'Orient-Le Jour.

    • An unnamed government official had told Reuters that the “Lebanese power network completely stopped working at noon today, and it is unlikely that it will work until next Monday, or for several days.”

    • The power failure comes after the Zahrani plant stopped work today after the Deir Ammar plant shut down yesterday due to fuel shortages.
