BAGHDAD — Iraq's al-Harir airbase, which hosts US and international forces, was targeted by an armed drone on Friday, Iraqi Kurdistan's counter-terrorism service said in a statement.

Al-Harir is an airbase located near to the town of Harir, in the Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Iraq.

The statement did not elaborate on whether the attack caused casualties or infrastructure damage.

On Thursday, the US military said it killed a high-ranking commander of an Iran-backed militia in Iraq, saying an air strike on the group’s logistics headquarters in central Baghdad was done in “self defense” after the faction conducted attacks on American personnel.

Last month, the United States carried out what it called "retaliatory air strikes" in Iraq after a drone attack by Iran-aligned militants that left one US service member in critical condition and wounded two others.

The US military has already come under attack at least 100 times in Iraq and Syria since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, usually with a mix of rockets and one-way attack drones.
